8 Fun Ways to Involve Kids in Thanksgiving Planning and Celebrations

Thanksgiving is a time for family, friends, and gratitude, and it's also a wonderful opportunity to get kids involved in the celebration! Engaging children in the planning process helps them feel like valued contributors, teaches them the importance of gratitude, and creates lasting memories. Here are some fun and easy ways to involve kids in Thanksgiving preparations:

1. Let Them Help with the Menu

Children love feeling like their input matters, so invite them to help choose the menu! Give them a few kid-friendly options to pick from or let them suggest a favorite side dish. This not only makes them feel included but also introduces them to family recipes and traditions. For an extra touch, consider having them create little menus for each place setting.

2. Make DIY Place Cards

Handmade place cards add a personal touch to the Thanksgiving table, and they’re a great project for little hands! Provide art supplies like paper, markers, and stickers, and let kids create custom place cards for each guest. This activity can be a wonderful way for kids to think about each family member and consider what makes each person special.

3. Create a Gratitude Tree

Encourage kids to reflect on what they’re thankful for by creating a "Gratitude Tree." Have them cut out paper leaves and write down things they’re grateful for on each one. They can then hang these on a small branch placed in a vase or on a paper tree on the wall. This activity helps children practice gratitude and makes a beautiful decoration for your home.

4. Kitchen Helpers in Training

Depending on their ages, kids can be given small tasks in the kitchen to help with meal prep. Younger kids can wash vegetables or set the table, while older children can help stir ingredients or decorate desserts. It’s a fun way to introduce them to cooking and share some quality time together. Make sure to pick tasks that are age-appropriate and safe.

5. Design a Thankful Tablecloth

If you have a plain cloth tablecloth, let your kids decorate it with Thanksgiving drawings or write messages of gratitude. Fabric markers work well for this, and the result is a keepsake that can be brought out each year. Not only will it brighten the table, but it also becomes a lasting memory of the year’s celebration.

6. Set Up a Kids’ Activity Table

If you’re hosting, a kids' table with Thanksgiving-themed activities can keep little ones entertained while also making them feel special. Set up crafts like coloring sheets, bead necklaces, or paper turkeys they can decorate. This gives them their own “project” for the day and allows the adults to enjoy their conversations.

7. Encourage Story Sharing

Thanksgiving is a wonderful time for kids to learn family stories and traditions. Encourage them to ask grandparents or older family members to share memories of past Thanksgivings, favorite traditions, or funny stories. They can even jot down these stories to make a "Family Thanksgiving Journal" that can be added to each year.

8. Plan a Post-Meal Activity Together

Finally, let your children help plan a post-dinner activity, like a family walk, a game night, or even a mini talent show! Involving them in planning something fun to look forward to gives them a sense of responsibility and excitement for the day.

Thanksgiving is a celebration of togetherness, and including kids in the planning helps create a family-centered holiday where everyone feels valued. Plus, these simple activities teach children about tradition, gratitude, and the joy of giving back. So this Thanksgiving, invite them to be part of the process—you might just create new traditions they’ll cherish for years to come.
